HMS/ HM BARK ENDEAVOUR’S HISTORY

The HMS Endeavour, later known as HM Bark Endeavour, is famous for its association with Captain James Cook’s first voyage of discovery to the Pacific Ocean.

• Construction: Originally a coal-carrying collier, the ship was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1768 and refitted for scientific exploration. It was renamed the HMS Endeavour.
• Voyage: Under the command of Captain James Cook, the Endeavour embarked on its historic journey in 1768. The primary mission was to observe the transit of Venus in the South Pacific and to explore and chart the largely uncharted lands, including New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia.
• Discoveries: Cook’s expedition aboard the Endeavour made significant discoveries, including the mapping of the east coast of Australia, which Cook named New South Wales. It also made contact with and documented the cultures and ecosystems of various Pacific islands.
• Fate: The ship’s later history involves being renamed and used as a transport vessel in different capacities before its eventual scuttling in 1778 in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, USA, during the American Revolutionary War.
