Amsterdam (VOC Ship) Model Ship’s HISTORY
The Amsterdam was an 18th-century cargo ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
- Construction: The Amsterdam was a large East India ship, built in 1748 for the VOC’s fleet. It was built at the VOC shipyard in Amsterdam.
- Purpose: Amsterdam was designed for long-distance trade voyages to the East Indies (modern-day Indonesia) and other parts of Asia. The goal is to transport goods between the Netherlands and lucrative markets in Asia.
- Specifications: The Amsterdam was an important ship, about 48 meters (158 feet) long and capable of carrying a large amount of cargo.
- Fate: Amsterdam’s service was relatively short-lived. In 1749, on its maiden voyage to the East Indies, the ship ran aground off the coast of Hastings, England due to stormy weather. Efforts to salvage the ship were unsuccessful and she was severely damaged beyond repair.

This museum displays various maritime artifacts and provides insights into the maritime history of the Netherlands, including the VOC era.
