12 APOSTLES’S HISTORY

The “Twelve Apostles” was a warship built for the Imperial Russian Navy, the only ship in her class. Twelve Apostles was built at the Admiralty Nikolayev Shipyard in Nikolayev. She was laid down on 21 August 1889, launched on 13 September 1890, and sailed for Sevastopol for fitting out on 11 May 1892.

Twelve Apostles had a pair of three-cylinder vertical steam engines built by the Baltic Works and had a total design output of 8,500 horsepower. Dvenadsat Apostolov’s main armament consisted of two pairs of 12-inch (305 mm) Obukhov Model 1877 30-caliber guns mounted on twin fore and aft mounts.

Decommissioned and disarmed in 1911, Twelve Apostles became an inactive submarine depot ship in 1912.
The Twelve Apostles were used as stand-ins for the ship’s subject during the filming of the 1925 Potemkin film The Battleship before being abandoned in 1931.
