HISTORY OF USS SUSQUEHANNA PAINTED

USS SUSQUEHANNA was a steam frigate of the United States Navy that played a significant role during the mid-19th century. Commissioned in 1850, the ship was named after the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania.

During its service, USS SUSQUEHANNA participated in various operations and conflicts. It served as the flagship of the Pacific Squadron, undertaking diplomatic missions and protecting American interests in the Pacific region. The ship played a crucial role in the opening of Japan to Western trade during Commodore Matthew Perry’s expedition in the 1850s.

USS SUSQUEHANNA also served during the American Civil War, primarily as a training ship for naval recruits. It played a part in blockading Confederate ports and supporting Union operations along the eastern seaboard.

After the war, USS SUSQUEHANNA continued its service in various capacities, including training midshipmen and serving as a receiving ship. It was decommissioned in 1883 and eventually sold.

USS SUSQUEHANNA’s legacy lives on as a symbol of American naval power and its involvement in diplomatic endeavors and conflicts during a transformative era in history.
