HISTORY OF MS WILLEM RUYS

The motor ship Willem Ruys, built in 1939 as MS Achille Lauro, was a cruise ship based in Naples, Italy. In 1947, it became MS Willem Ruys, a passenger ship for Rotterdamsche Lloyd. The ship is known for its 1985 robbery by members of the Palestine Liberation Front and its 1994 fire and sinking.

The ship was ordered in 1938 by Rotterdamsche Lloyd from the Royal Maatschappij De Schelde (KMS) shipyard in Vlissingen and bore construction number 214.

On October 7, 1985, four people acting on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) hijacked the ship off the Egyptian coast while it was en route from Alexandria to Port Said. Sometime after the robbery, the ship continued its cruise. When she visited Antwerp on 19 March 1993 on a cruise in Western European waters, she passed through the Vlissingen road basin to great public interest. More than a year and a half later, on November 30, 1994, a fire broke out on a ship off the coast of Somalia. The ship listed and sank on December 2 despite the assistance of a tugboat
