MAHMUDIYE’S HISTORY

Mahmudiye was a large warship of the Ottoman Empire, built in the 19th century. It was named after Sultan Mahmud II, who promoted the construction of this ship. The Mahmudiye is considered one of the symbols of the Ottoman Empire’s naval power during its peak.

Mahmudiye is designed as a galleon (a warship with large cargo tanks and weapons arranged on many floors) with large capacity and powerful weapons. The ship had 128 guns and was built at the Imperial Arsenal Shipyard in Istanbul, Türkiye, and completed in 1829.

Mahmudiye mainly operated in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, contributing to many Ottoman military campaigns. The ship has also participated in operations against European powers such as Russia and Egypt.

Although a symbol of Ottoman naval power, after a long period of service, Mahmudiye was dismantled at the end of the 19th century because it could no longer meet the needs of the new era and was no longer maintained. However, the Mahmudiye is still remembered as a symbol of Ottoman naval power during their historical period.
