HISTORY OF USS IOWA (BB-61)

USS Iowa (BB-61) (nicknamed “The Big Stick”) was the first battleship of the Iowa class and the fourth warship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the 29th state. of the United States. Iowa was the only United States warship equipped with a bathtub and the only ship of her class to see action in the Atlantic during World War II.

During World War II, Iowa, while operating in the Atlantic, served as a shuttle for President Franklin D. Roosevelt to attend the Tehran Conference. When transferred to the Pacific Fleet in 1944, Iowa bombarded the beaches at Kwajalein and Eniwetok against Allied amphibious assaults and screened aircraft carriers operating in the Marshall Islands. . During the Korean War, Iowa participated in bombardment along the North Korean coast, before being decommissioned and transferred to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet.

Iowa was finally decommissioned in 1990 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in 1995; but she was re-registered from 1999 to 2006 under a federal law mandating the retention and maintenance of two Iowa-class battleships. In 2011 Iowa was donated to the Pacific Warship Center in Los Angeles as a non-profit organization and was permanently moved to Pier 87 at the Port of Los Angeles in 2012, where it was opened to the public. and became the USS Iowa Museum.
