HISTORY OF USS CALIFORNIA (BB-44)

USS California (BB-44) was a Tennessee-class battleship and the fifth warship of the United States Navy to be named in honor of the 31st state of the United States. Beginning service as flagship of the Pacific Fleet, she operated there throughout her career.

During the attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, she was sunk but later raised and rebuilt. She continued to serve in the Pacific theater for the remainder of World War II until its end, then was decommissioned in 1947 due to obsolescence.
