MERCATOR’S HISTORY

The Mercator is a historic sailing ship known for its role as a training vessel and its cultural significance in Belgium.

• Construction: Built in 1932 in Scotland, the Mercator was originally a training ship for the Belgian merchant fleet. It was constructed as a sailing training ship to instruct young cadets in seamanship and navigation.
• Purpose: The ship primarily served as a training vessel, offering practical education to cadets preparing for careers in the merchant navy.
• Design: The Mercator is a three-masted barquentine, distinguished by its elegant design and the ability to be sailed by a relatively small crew. Its design allowed for practical training in traditional seamanship.
• Present Day: The ship is no longer used for active training purposes. Instead, it has been preserved as a museum ship in the Mercator Marina in Ostend, Belgium. The Mercator Museum allows visitors to explore the ship, learn about its history, and discover Belgium’s maritime past.
