KANRIN MARU’S HISTORY
In 1853, the Tokugawa shogunate (shogunate’s government) recognized the importance of building its own navy after more than two centuries of isolation. They soon asked the Dutch government to build a Japanese warship (250 tons), renamed the Kanrin Maru (49 meters long, and heavily armed with 16 guns, cannons and mortars, and a gunboat.
Construction cost is 70,000 USD. The ship has become one of the important symbols of the modernization process in Japan. The purpose of the mission was to exchange documents ratifying the 1860 treaty. The Kanrin was the first Japanese ship to visit the United States or any foreign country in centuries.
Not long after departing, Kanrin Maru encountered one of the worst storms ever encountered in the Pacific. An American officer, United States Navy Lieutenant John M. Brooke, and nine other American sailors under his command helped save the ship. Kanrin pushed forward, and after 37 days at sea, she finally anchored in San Francisco Harbor.
2010 marked the 150th anniversary of the arrival in San Francisco of the Kanrin Maru, the first official Japanese ship to land on American soil. The arrival of the Kanrin Maru, also signaled an important chapter in the beginning of formal relations between the United States and Japan, seven years after Commodore Matthew Perry sailed to Japan to end two centuries of Japanese isolation.
The 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Kanrin Maru commemorates not only the event but also 150 years of history between the United States and Japan and the roots of the Japanese American community.
