HISTORY OF TIRPITZ CAMOUFLAGE
Tirpitz was the second ship of the Bismarck-class battleships built for the German Navy during World War II. It was named after Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, architect of the Imperial German Navy. Laid down at Kriegsmarinewerft, Wilhelmshaven in November 1936 and launched in April 1939. She entered service in February 1941.
After completing sea trials in early 1941, Tirpitz served as the flagship of the German Baltic Fleet, which was intended to deter the Soviet Baltic Fleet. In early 1942 the ship departed for Norway to act as a deterrent against the Allies. While stationed in Norway, Tirpitz could also be used to intercept Soviet convoys, but neither mission was carried out.
Tirpitz was attacked by 32 Avro Lancaster heavy bombers during Operation Catechism on November 12, 1944. The protective roof and rotating rails of this turret were thrown into the air. 971 German sailors died, including Captain Robert Weber. Tirpitz’s wreck was recovered and disassembled into parts to be sold for scrap after the war.
