HISTORY OF HMAS COLLINS SSG 73

HMAS Collins (SSG-73) is a conventionally powered missile attack submarine serving in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Named after Vice Admiral Sir John Augustine Collins, it was launched in 1993 and commissioned in 1996. Displacing 3,350 tons surfaced and 3,700 tons submerged, with a crew of 48, Collins has a range of 11,500 nautical miles on the surface and 400 nautical miles underwater.

Equipped with various systems including radar, sonar, and torpedo tubes, Collins is capable of engaging in modern submarine warfare. It has undergone crew integration efforts, becoming one of the first submarines to include women in its crew in 1997. Collins has also demonstrated its capabilities through missile tests and training exercises, serving as a deterrent in the Asia-Pacific region amidst regional tensions, particularly with China.
