ENDURANCE’S HISTORY

The Endurance is a famous ship in the history of exploring the South Pole.

The Endurance was built in 1912 in Sandefjord, Norway, under the management of Norwegian shipwright Christian Jacobsen. The ship was originally named “Polaris” before being purchased by Sir Ernest Shackleton and renamed “Endurance.”

The Endurance became famous through Sir Ernest Shackleton’s voyage of discovery to Antarctica, known as the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Voyage. The goal of the journey is to travel from the South Pole to the North Pole of Antarctica, then continue across Antarctica to reach the Ross Sea. The journey began in 1914. However, the Endurance was stuck in ice in the Weddell Sea and could not proceed as planned. Sailors and members of the convoy had to live on the ice for many months.
