GJOA’S HISTORY

Gjøa is a historic ship used by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen during his groundbreaking expedition through the Northwest Passage.

• Construction: The Gjøa was a small rowed ship, about 47 feet long. It was built in 1872 and designed primarily for Arctic fishing.
• The expedition: Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, purchased Gjøa in 1901 and began preparing it for an ambitious expedition to navigate the Northwest Passage.
• Historic voyage: From 1903 to 1906, Amundsen and his crew sailed Gjøa through the Northwest Passage, making it the first successful voyage of this dangerous route.
• Legacy: The successful navigation of the Northwest Passage aboard Gjøa was a significant maritime achievement and contributed greatly to the understanding of the Arctic region.

Amundsen’s expedition remains a historic milestone in the history of exploration and navigation.
Gjøa is now housed at the Norwegian Maritime Museum in Oslo, where it stands as a testament to her remarkable voyage and pioneering spirit of Arctic exploration.
