SANTA MARIA’S HISTORY

The SANTA MARIA is one of the most famous ships in history, known for its role in Christopher Columbus’s voyage to the Americas in 1492. It was a carrack, a large and sturdy sailing vessel of the time. The ship was commanded by Columbus himself and played a pivotal role in the discovery of the New World.

During the expedition, the SANTA MARIA, along with the Niña and the Pinta, set sail from Spain and crossed the Atlantic Ocean. It reached the Caribbean islands, making landfall in what is now present-day Bahamas. The ship served as Columbus’s flagship and was used to establish the first European settlement in the Americas, named La Navidad.

However, the journey of the SANTA MARIA came to an unfortunate end when it ran aground on Christmas Day of 1492. Columbus and his crew salvaged what they could and built a fort with the remains of the ship before returning to Spain.

The SANTA MARIA remains an iconic symbol of exploration and the beginning of European colonization in the Americas. Its historical significance is celebrated worldwide, and replicas of the ship can be found in various museums and historical sites.
