HISTORY
The SS George Washington was a notable ocean liner that served during the early 20th century. It is best known for its role during World War I as a troop transport vessel.
- Construction and Launch: The SS George Washington was originally built as a passenger liner named the SS George Washington by the North German Lloyd (Norddeutscher Lloyd) shipping company. It was constructed in Bremen, Germany, and was launched in 1908
- Transfer to the United States: In 1917, after the United States entered the war, the ship was seized by the U.S. government and transferred to the United States Navy. It was renamed the USS George Washington (ID-3018) and converted into a troop transport ship.
- Service: After the war, the ship was briefly returned to its original owner, North German Lloyd, and resumed passenger service between Bremen, Germany, and New York.
- Renaming and Final Fate: In 1921, the ship was sold to the United States Mail Steamship Company and renamed the SS George Washington. It continued its passenger service until 1922, when it was scrapped in Italy.
