GLENLEE’S HISTORY

Construction: Built in 1896 by Anderson Rodger & Company in Port Glasgow, Scotland, Glenlee was designed to trade and operate as a cargo ship. It was originally named “Glenlee” after the Glenlee estate in Galloway, Scotland.

Cargo ship era: In its early years, Glenlee transported a variety of goods around the world, including jute, coal and other goods.

Owner: Glenlee has changed hands several times during its time, operating under different flags and serving different companies globally.

Restoration: In the early 1990s, the ship was purchased by the Clyde Maritime Trust with the aim of preserving it as a maritime museum. The trust has meticulously restored Glenlee to its former glory with the aim of demonstrating its historical significance.

Museum ship: Since its restoration, Glenlee has been docked at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow, Scotland. It serves as a floating museum, giving visitors a glimpse into the lives of sailors and maritime history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
